Aemilianus surprises and wins Gr2 HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani Trophy

In presence of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani and QREC senior executives, the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani Trophy race meeting was conducted at QREC Al Rayyan Racecourse on Thursday, 14 March 2024. The bumper nine-race card was held on the turf track and it offered whooping total of prize money of QAR 2,220,000. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani crowned the winner of the third race in the card, Jaafer Thoroughbred Handicap Cup. In the meeting’s feature and final event, Sheikh Mohammed bin Salman M Al Thani’s Aemilianus (GER) (Holy Roman Emperor x Assisi) landed the Group 2 HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani Trophy, taking his career to a new level with this black-type victory. Under Marco Casamento, the 5YO powered to victory by a length in the 2000m race for four-year-old and older Thoroughbreds. In doing so, the five-year-old gelding completed a double in the evening for trainer Gassim Ghazali, who marked his stamp on both the opener and the final race of the meeting. The Khalifa Bin Sheail KH J Al Kuwari-owned and Julian Smart-trained King Pacha (IRE) (Acclamation) finished runner-up under jockey Alberto Sanna. The Wathnan Racing-owned and Alban de Mieulle-trained Bolthole (IRE) (Free Eagle) completed the frame in third under jockey Soufiane Saadi and did not finish far behind the first two as he was only a further short head behind. Dean Lavy, Director of Al Shahania Stud, crowned the winners.

Tareq

Earlier in the evening, the Al Rufaa Racing-owned Tareq (FR) (AF AlBahar x Farlet De Pine) shed his maiden tag at fourth time of asking, as the Gassim Ghazali-trained four-year-old gelding took the opener, the Mared Al Sahra Premium Maiden Cup, a 2000m class 6 race for four-to-six-year old Purebred Arabians, by a length under jockey Alberto Sanna, confirming his very promising efforts in his previous starts. Dean Lavy, Director of Al Shahania Stud crowned the winners.

AJS Jassas

Al Jeryan Stud’s homebred AJS Jassas (AF AlBahar x Al Qadesiyah) got back to winning ways, landing the Djendel Novice Cup, a 1500m Class 5 race for four-year-old and older Local Purebred Arabians. Szczepan Mazur was on board the four-year-old gelding and they won with two lengths and a quarter to spare. The M.H.K Al Attiyah’s trainee has never been outside the first four in all his eight starts so far. Dean Lavy, Director of Al Shahania Stud crowned the winners.

Ends Of The Earth

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani crowned the winners of the Jaafer Thoroughbred Handicap Cup. It was the Injaaz Stud-owned Ends Of The Earth (GB) (Territories x Heavenly Scent), who landed the spoils, proving much the best under jockey Anas Al Seyabi in the 1500m Class 3 contest for three-year-old and older horses rated70-90. Trainer Zuhair Mohsen won the title for the 2nd year in row, having saddled the 4YO colt to a one-and-a-half-length victory.

Fayq Al Shahania

HE Sheikha Iman bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Fayq Al Shahania (FR) (Jaafer ASF x Cherazade) won the Aziz Purebred Arabian Handicap Cup, a 1400m Class 3 race for four-year-old and older horses rated70-90. Trainer Rudy Nerbonne saddled the five-year-old to lead his rivals home. Partnered by jockey Lukas Delozier, the roan horse won the 1400m race by one and a half lengths. Bader Mohammed Al Darwish, QREC Acting CEO, crowned the winners.

Kerindia

Injaaz Stud’s Kerindia (IRE) (Cotai Glory x Coursing) retained the Assy Thoroughbred Filly & Mare Cup for the second straight year. Faleh Bughanaim rode four-year-old filly to quicken away smartly from her rivals and win the 1500m Class 2 contest for three-year-old and older fillies and mares impressively by three and a half lengths for trainer Zuhair Mohsen, who registered his second win in the evening. Hamad bin Abdulrahman Al Attiya, President of the Asian Equestrian Federation and Vice Chairman of QREC, crowned the winners.

AJS Lattam

Al Jeryan Stud, trainer M.H.K Al Attiyah and jockey Szczepan Mazur landed their second success of the evening as AJS Lattam (QA) (AF AlBahar x Saheel ASF) won the Mared Al Sahra Cup with ease. Throughout the 1400m Class 2 Conditions for four-year-old and older Local Purebred Arabians, Mazur looked confident aboard the four-year-old colt, who stretched clear in the straight to land the spoils by five and a half lengths clear of his nearest rival. Bader Mohammed Al Darwish, QREC Acting CEO, crowned the winners.

Al Buraq

The trio of Al Jeryan Stud, trainer M.H.K Al Attiyah and jockey Szczepan Mazur were quickly back in the winners’ enclosure for the third time in the evening, having registered a quick-fire double with Al Buraq (QA) (Nathaniel x Foxtrol Alpha) winning the Gazwan Cup. The five-year-old gelding edged Harb (QA) (Time Test) by a neck to win the 1400m Class 2 Conditions for four-year-old and older Local Thoroughbreds. The fast-finishing runner-up, owned by Al Rabban Racing and trained by Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki, came with a late charge under jockey Tomas Lukasek, to challenge the eventual winner to the line. Dean Lavy, Director of Al Shahania Stud crowned, the winners.

Layeq

Jockey Szczepan Mazur seemed unstoppable as he regisered his 3rd consecutive win and his 4th in the evening, guiding the Khalifa Bin Sheail KH J Al Kuwari-owned Layeq (QA) (T M Fred Texas x Ramdha) to success in the Ebraz Cup. Trained by Julian Smart, the five-year-old horse came nicely clear of his rivals in the closing stages of the 2000m Class 1 race for four-year-old and older Local Purebred Arabians to win by a length and a quarter. In doing so, Layeq retained the Ebraz Cup for the second year in a row for himself, his owner and his trainer as well. Dean Lavy, Director of Al Shahania Stud, crowned the winners.
