It’s time for H H The Emir’s Sword race
It is one of the most awaited meetings in the Qatar horse racing calendar. And it is set to arrive this week at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (REC).
H H The Emir Trophies and Sword Festival gets under way on March 28 and concludes on March 31 with the prestigious His Highness The Emir’s Sword Race during the 32nd race meeting.
The Festival is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar.
As part of the Festival, Qatar International Arabian Horse Show will be held on March 28 to 29, where an exclusive show is being held for Egyptian bred Pure Arabians at the indoor arena of the Qatar Equestrian Federation.
His Highness The Emir’s Sword race is set to be run on QREC’s New Rayyan track on March 31, Thursday. On the same day, there is also H H The Emir’s Trophy for Thoroughbreds, H H The Emir’s Trophy for local bred Pure Arabians and the Qatar 2022 Thoroughbred International Invitation Cup.
As always there will be an assembly of top class Pure Arabian horses for H H The Emir’s Sword race. The contest carries prize money of QR 1.5 million and is expected to be a thrilling affair as witnessed over the years.
The roll of honour for H H The Emir’s Sword race includes Qatar’s champion horses and this year the line-up includes two-time Qatar Arabian World Cup winner General from Umm Qarn Farms.
Last year, Umm Qarn Farms’ champion horse Al Dahma had won the contest. However, this year, Al Dahma is not in the race. General had lost out to Al Dahma’s brilliance in the last edition and it is now time for General to make a mark.
General will yet again be under the spotlight with equine enthusiasts cheering this champion horse trained by Alban de Mieulle.
There are 16 runners in the fray for the 2,400-metre contest.
Besides the champion General, Umm Qarn Farms has three more contests in Jusoor, Kasih and Raqiyah.
Al Shahania Stud will be represented by Asraa Min Albarq nurtured by Julian Smart. Jaafer and Aziz will be Smart’s other trainees in the fray.
Total E&P Qatar will be the title sponsor of this prestigious race. QREC and Total Qatar signed a sponsorship agreement in this regard on Sunday.
QREC Chairman Sheikh Mohammed bin Faleh Al Thani said that QREC would be hosting HH The Emir’s Festival from November to March from next season.
“We want to make this event a big one from next season and attract more international participation. We have discussed this in the Board meeting and have planned to conduct this Festival on a mega scale. Facilities like stables and training for horses from overseas will have to be provided and we are sure we are capable of doing so.”
Top Thoroughbreds will also be at the starting gates for H H The Emir’s Trophy with a purse of QR 800,000. It will be a contest to be run over 2,200 metres.
Joshua Tree, Miss Starlight, Lancelot, Amico Mio, Sun Of The Sea are some of the big names in the fray for the Thoroughbreds competition, which carries a purse of QR 800,000.
There are two more QR 500,000 worth prize money races. One race involving Thoroughbreds and the other for local bred Pure Arabians. The Qatar 2022 Thoroughbred International Invitation Cup will be run over 1,200 metres with 16 Thoroughbreds.
