Umm Qarn’s YAZEED wins Qatar National Day Trophy thriller

Umm Qarn’s YAZEED (Munjiz x Al Dahma) bounced back from his only finish outside the top three in his career with a victory in the THE LATE SHEIKH JASSIM BIN MOHAMMED AL THANI TROPHY – QATAR NATIONAL DAY TROPHY (Gr2 PA) at the Al Rayyan Park turf on Sunday. Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle trained colt had finished fifth in the Qatar Arabian World Cup in Longchamp in October, but did well under Ronan Thomas on Sunday to beat some of his rivals from the race in France, edging out Julian Colin Smart schooled GAZWAN (Amer x Arc De Ciel) at the post by a short head. Ryan Curatolo ridden Gazwan, owned by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani, finished ahead of third placed stablemate EBRAZ (Amer x Massamarie), who had Theo Bachelot in the saddle.

Injaaz Stud’s BLACK GRANITE (Dark Angel x Glisten) went one better than his last outing, Gr3 Barzan Cup, to win the six furlong THOROUGHBRED CONDITIONS (Class 2) sprint for trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi. The victory, which the gelding took with half a length to spare at the post, was the second on the day for both the trainer and jockey Harry Bentley.

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s SHARESA (Burning Sand x Margouia) made it two victories from two runs this season, this time under Theo Bachelot, in the LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN CONDITIONS. The filly won the seven furlong race with three lengths and a quarter to spare and was the second winner on the day for trainer Julian Colin Smart and Bachelot.

Al Jeryan Stud’s HAJAJ (Dark Angel x And Again) had shown promise in the first two races this season and Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani’s ward moved up in class as well to win the mile long THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (75-95) on Sunday. The victory was second on the day for both Al Ramzani and jockey Faleh Bughanaim.

After finishing midfield more than two weeks ago in the Gr3 Guineas, Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi trained ANIMA ROCK (Shamalgan x Carnet De Bal) was back in the winner’s enclosure at the Al Rayyan Park for his second victory this season in the THOROUGHBRED PLATE (3 Year Olds) (Class 3). Harry Bentley helmed the Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari owned colt to a comfortable two length victory in the seven furlong run.

Osama Omer Al Dafea’s HARRY’S DANCER (Kodiac x Dance On) had shown improvements late last season finishing with two runners-up and a win. On Sunday, the mare made it two victories from two races this season with Stephan Ladjadj guiding the 6yo to a fine three quarters of a length victory at the post in the five furlong THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (75-95) sprint.

Julian Colin Smart trained AL SHAMAN (War Front x Communique) had opened the last season with two victories before he began missing the mark. The 4yo opened his season with a win yet again under Theo Bachelot, who rode the colt in the silks of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (70-90).

Qatari jockey Rashid Ali Al Marri registered his sixth win this season when he guided Mansoor Mesfer Al Hajri’s HADDAJ DUKHAN (Majd Al Arab x Gantra El Baraka) to a thrilling victory in the mile long PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (95 & below). The quarter of a length victory meant that the 6yo horse has been unbeaten this season having won all three of his runs so far.

Mohanad Jassim Al Yaqout’s ELLIANKA (Majd Al Arab x Billou Al Maury) went one better than her last two outings this season to register her first career victory winning the PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE (4 Year Olds) with ease. Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani’s ward had come close twice running sprints this season, but on Sunday stepped up to a mile, and won with two lengths to spare under Faleh Bughanaim.
