Contrary to expectations, Muraaqib won the Qatar International Stakes, a Group 1 race for Purebred Arabians, at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. The mile-long race has a purse of £400,000 and represents the first leg of the Doha Triple Crown.
HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani-owned Tayf and the HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani-owned Ebraz were the favourites being the one two from last year’s renewal. However, Muraaqib was the one who landed the spoils and he was followed by the runner-up, the Julian Smart-trained and T Bachelot-ridden Ebraz.
It was a top quality renewal with 10 runners, between them they had won 11 Group One’s – now 12 – and 23 pattern races.
Doctor Hamad Al Muftah, the Deputy Ambassador of Qatar to the UK, presented the trophies to the winners.
