Al Malki’s Khataaf impresses in Al Safliya Cup victory

Almost a month after winning the Wathnan Cup, Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki’s Khataaf (Shamardal x Sana Abel) stepped up in distance to bag the AL SAFLIYA CUP (Listed) (THOROUGHBREDS Class 1). Jimmy Quinn helmed the 4yo in the 2400m run to register his second victory of the 10-race card, as the gelding beat Stefano Ibido trained Otwo by a length, while another Al Malki ward Jewel House completed the top three.

In the penultimate race of the day, champion trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi saddled his third winner of the day. Al Naif Racing’s Molheb Al Naif (Amer x Kesbah) opened his season from where he left last time round, winning the LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN CONDITIONS with ease. The 6yo, who had won the Qatar Silver Trophy to cap his last season, was raced to a three lengths and a quarter victory by Harry Bentley on Thursday in the six furlong sprint.


After closing out his last season with promising results, Osama Omer Al Dafea’s Harry’s Dancer (Kodiac x Dance On) opened the new season with a victory in the THOROUGHBRED (Fillies & Mares) (Class 3). With Stephan Ladjadj in the saddle, the 6yo edged out Almotasem Al Balushi ridden Botanical by three quarters of a length at the post in the six furlong sprint.

Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani trained Top Face (Tiznow x Toppisme) notched his second straight victory to stay unbeaten this season. Ridden by Tomas Lukasek on both the occasions, on Thursday, the colt, owned by Mohammed Khalifa Al Sowaidi, won the seven furlong THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (70-90) comfortably with one and a half lengths to spare.

Jockey Theo Bachelot rode his first winner of the season in Qatar when he helmed Julian Colin Smart trained Ezaajh (Mared Al Sahra x Iftekhar ASF) to her second career victory in the LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (80 & below). Owned by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani, the 5yo finished with a length to spare for her first victory since April.

Qatari jockey Saleh Salem Al Marri registered his third victory of the season when he guided Take A Nap (Vocalised x Napping) to a victory in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 5) (Qatari Riders Only) (70 & below) in dominant fashion. Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi schooled colt won by four lengths and three quarters in the 1850m run on turf.

Umm Qarn’s Al Kabeer (No Risk Al Maury x Al Dahma) was back at the Al Rayyan Park turf after a gap of 11 months, and immediately under Ronan Thomas, Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle’s ward topped the mile long PUREBRED ARABIAN GRADUATION PLATE with a spectacular seven lengths to spare at the post.

Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi’s AJS Al Moheeb (Amer x Gabie De Carrere) continued his upward movement, following up his second and third place finish with his maiden victory in the 1850m PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE on Thursday. Ridden by champion jockey Harry Bentley, the 5yo finished three lengths ahead of his rivals for a fine win.

In a dominant finish to the mile long LOCAL THOROUGHBRED MAIDEN PLATE, Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki-trained Shaman Bu Thaila (Soviet Secret x Picnic Party) followed up his third place finish in his season opener with a spectacular win on Thursday. Under a sublime ride by Jimmy Quinn, the 4yo crossed the post with a little under five lengths to spare.

Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s Jouriya (Kodiac x Short Shrift) had impressed all with a fourth place finish in the Oaks Trials last month. Over C&D in the mile-long LOCAL THOROUGHBRED MAIDEN PLATE (3 Year Olds), Mohammed Riyaz Ibrahim Kasim’s ward raced to a comfortable victory with a length to spare under Marco Casamento.
